Everyone is different. Stress, anxiety, depression are common ‘symptoms’ that are spoken about in counselling. I am interested in what these ‘symptoms’ actually look and feel like in your everyday life and how you have been coping so far.
Everyone has strengths. We will find them… even if we have to explore long forgotten memories.
Everyone has a story. Knowing who you are or rediscovering who you are is an important part of the counselling experience. Writing the ‘next chapter’ of your life story can be an exciting journey.
I use a blend of evidence-based therapies (like CBT, Mindfulness, Narrative therapy) with the people I see. I am particularly interested in creative therapies using art, journal writing, visualisations, symbolism/metaphor.
I have been a counselling psychologist for over 16 years. I have the experience and interest in the following areas:
- – Anxiety, depression, stress, burn out
- – Grief/Loss Counselling
- – Fertility issues
- – Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating) Support
- – Tertiary Education issues- eg- exclusions
- – International student issues
Please note that I do not provide extensive forensic/ court. Subject to my assessment I may provide a brief report/attendance letter for court, education providers, employers or immigration. Some of these reports may attract an additional fee. I am happy to clarify via email/phone.
John Burney
Bachelor of Psychology (Honours First Class) University of New England; Member of the Australian Psychological Society ; WorkCover Accredited
John’s work in private clinical practice has equipped him with the ability to assess and treat presenting clinical symptoms and assist people to achieve their therapeutic goals. He is a registered psychologist working in both clinical and organisational practice. A unique blend of business experience in management roles, as well as many years of experience in assessment, development and counselling gives him a sound understanding of people and the stressors they face in both the workplace and in private life.
“I see my role as a guiding facilitator, helping clients to understand their emotions and life stressors in order to take control of their lives and the situations in which they find themselves. I listen, and importantly hear the client’s issues and give guidance, direction and a sense of purpose to resolve them. Importantly, I ensure the client has ownership of the outcomes.
The first session with me is about finding out why the client has come to me and I typically take a history and ask questions to understand the client’s concerns. The client can expect to feel heard and understood, with a takeaway that gives them encouragement to continue the journey with me.”
